Shopify native 3D or the Visuality app: which should you choose?
Shopify's native 3D is enough if you already have GLB or USDZ files and a compatible theme: no app is needed. The Visuality app becomes useful when you need to create your models (AI from a photo), offer desktop visitors a QR code, or reuse your models outside Shopify.
What can Shopify do natively with 3D?
Shopify accepts 3D models as product media, just like photos and videos. According to its Help Center, the accepted formats are GLB and USDZ, up to 500 MB per file. Files over 15 MB are optimized automatically. In every case, Shopify prepares both a GLB and a USDZ version so the model works on Android as well as iOS.
On the storefront, Shopify uses Google's model-viewer component for the 3D viewer and its Shopify-XR library for augmented reality: AR Quick Look in Safari on iOS, Scene Viewer on Android. The model only appears if the theme supports it. That is the case for all Online Store 2.0 themes built by Shopify and for the Horizon family of themes; for a third-party theme, check its version.
To create a model, Shopify offers a 3D scanner in its mobile app. It only works on compatible iPhones and iPads (iPhone 12 Pro and later, 2021 iPad Pro and later, running iOS or iPadOS 17 or newer), requires a product at least 8 cm (3 in) in every dimension and takes about 10 to 15 minutes per scan. Shopify also points merchants to its Partners for custom modeling.

What does the Visuality app add to Shopify's 3D?
Visuality is a French SaaS platform, published by Inside Learning, that lets businesses display their products in 3D and augmented reality on iPhone and Android, with no app to install, via a link, a QR code, an iframe embed or the Shopify and PrestaShop integrations.
The Visuality app, published on the Shopify App Store in May 2026, does not use the product media gallery: it adds a block to your theme that shows the Visuality 3D viewer, an augmented reality QR code, or both. You add the block from the theme editor, with no code.
- Create the model without a source file: generate a 3D model from a product photo with AI (monthly quota depending on the plan), import a GLB or USDZ file, scan the product with RealityScan or request custom modeling on quote.
- A USDZ file prepared for iPhone: Visuality automatically generates the USDZ on the server from the GLB, with the scale baked into the file; heavy AI-generated models are reduced to about 200,000 triangles and textures are capped at 2048 px.
- A QR code for desktop visitors: on a computer, the augmented reality button shows a QR code that the customer scans to place the product in their home with their smartphone.
- The same models outside Shopify: public link, QR code to print on a catalog or packaging, iframe embed on another website, PrestaShop module and REST API.
- Staging features: object groups shared through a single link (one object at a time via a selector; several objects at once in augmented reality with the Android app), color or option variants, animations, real-scale floor or wall placement (wall on Android), size locking, background images and photo capture in augmented reality.
- An offline Android app: handy at trade shows or sales meetings when the network is weak.
Shopify also prepares a USDZ version of your models, so automatic conversion alone is not a reason to choose Visuality. The difference lies mainly in creating models, access from a computer and distribution outside the store.
Shopify native 3D or Visuality: comparison table
| Criterion | Shopify native 3D | Visuality app |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | No app to add: the model is a product media item | From $32.99/month, billed by Shopify |
| Upload formats | GLB and USDZ, up to 500 MB (automatic optimization above 15 MB) | GLB and USD/USDZ (USD files are converted to GLB on upload) |
| iPhone version (USDZ) | Prepared automatically by Shopify | Generated automatically on the server, scale baked in, heavy models reduced |
| Placement on the product page | Product media gallery, if the theme is compatible | Theme block: 3D viewer, QR code or both |
| Augmented reality on mobile | AR Quick Look (Safari on iOS) and Scene Viewer (Android) | AR Quick Look on iPhone and iPad, Scene Viewer or WebXR on Android |
| Desktop visitors | 3D viewer; the documentation we reviewed does not describe a QR code hand-off to mobile | 3D viewer and a QR code to open augmented reality on the smartphone |
| Creating the 3D model | 3D scanner in the Shopify app (compatible iPhone or iPad) or a Shopify Partner | AI from a photo, GLB/USDZ import, RealityScan scanning guide, custom modeling on quote |
| Distribution outside the store | Shopify store and the Shop app | Public link, QR code, iframe, PrestaShop module, REST API, offline Android app |
| Several objects in one scene | Not described in the documentation we reviewed | Yes in augmented reality with the Android app; in the web viewer, object groups show one object at a time via a selector |
When should you choose Shopify's native 3D over Visuality?
Native 3D is often the right choice, and it costs nothing extra. It works especially well in these situations:
- You already have your GLB or USDZ files, supplied by your manufacturer or a 3D modeler: just add them to the product media.
- Your theme is compatible (a Shopify Online Store 2.0 theme or the Horizon family) and you want 3D to appear in the gallery, next to the photos.
- Your customers mostly buy from their smartphone and you don't need a QR code for desktop visitors.
- You have a compatible iPhone or iPad and products that are easy to scan (matte, rigid, at least 8 cm): the Shopify app's scanner can produce your models.
- 3D is only used on your Shopify store: no trade show, printed catalog or other website to supply.
When is the Visuality app a better fit?
- You have no 3D files and no device compatible with the scanner: AI generation starts from a simple product photo.
- A large share of your traffic comes from computers: the QR code lets visitors switch to augmented reality on their phone without searching for the product again.
- Your models need to live outside Shopify: QR codes in store, on a booth or on packaging, embeds on a brochure website, a PrestaShop store or another tool through the API.
- Your teams present products in the field: the Android app works offline.
- You want to group several objects under a single link (one object at a time in the viewer, several at once in augmented reality with the Android app), or offer color variants in the viewer.

Can you combine Shopify's native 3D and Visuality?
Yes, the two approaches are not mutually exclusive. Native 3D appears in the product gallery, while the Visuality block sits elsewhere on the page. For a clear product page, though, it is better to choose a single viewer per product.
One possible setup is to keep native 3D on the store and use Visuality for everything else: printed QR codes, trade shows, sales presentations or other websites. In both cases, customers don't download any app.
How much does each option cost?
Native 3D requires no app: you add the model like any other product media. The only potential cost is creating the 3D file (scanner, 3D modeler or Partner).
The Visuality app is a monthly subscription billed by Shopify in US dollars, every 30 days. The entry plan costs $32.99/month. Free trial: 7 days (Bronze). Plans differ by the number of 3D objects and the monthly AI generation quota; views are unlimited, with no per-view fee. See all pricing.
